About the event

Illuminating the Shadows: Emergence in Team Coaching

What is it that teams find most helpful when being coached?

Research has shown that it is not when they achieve a specific goal agreed at the outset, but instead when they experience the processes of emergence which leads them to new goals and unexpected outcomes.

In this virtual session, we will explore what teams find most helpful in coaching, the conditions that enable emergence, and a meta-framework for emergent coaching. We will also discuss practical guidelines for coaches who wish to work more emergently.

Key themes:

  • The purpose of team coaching

  • Surfacing and creating awareness around what is implicit or unknown

  • Enabling the conditions for emergence

About the Speaker:

Dr Sebastian Fox

Team Coach | Executive Coach | Researcher

Dr Sebastian Fox is an experienced executive and team coach who helps teams become more effective by enabling them to surface, make meaning and address what’s getting in the way. Through creating a safe space for those conversations to take place, it allows individuals and team members to become aware of and address challenges or issues in a constructive manner and achieve the desired outcome.

He draws on his experience from working with multinational leadership teams across different organisations in the UK, Europe and Asia and was part of the EthicalCoach leadership team which planned, implemented and evaluated from scratch a project to train local team coaches and partner them with experienced international coaches to work with third sector organisations in Ethiopia.

Dr Sebastian Fox completed his Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring in 2024 at Oxford Brookes University having carried out ground-breaking research into how teams find their coaching to be helpful. He has a Masters in Coaching and Development and holds the ICF’s Advanced Certificate in Team Coaching. Sebastian has published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals and spoken at global research conferences. He is Head of Research at the Team Coaching Studio, a niche provider of coach development, where he leads and shapes their community’s research agenda to challenge and support practitioner thinking in team coaching, and co-leads the EMCC Team Coaching Special Interest Group.
